The boy band is *so* back.
Prepare to meet your new dance pop obsession: A group of soon-to-be-superstars by the name of JYT (Just Your Type). After dropping their debut single, “What U Want”, last month, the five teens—ages 15-17—have already captured our hearts with their earworm melodies, vocals reminiscent of early-career Biebs and, ofc, that impossibly-synced choreo.
We got the inside scoop on their rise to fame from members Toby Green, Caden Adamonis, Bryan Holden Chan, Recker Eans and Tyler Georgeso (pictured above from left to right)—so you can get to know them now before they totally blow up.
(Psst, need more JYT? A multi-part docuseries covering the band’s origin story is currently in production—one the guys describe as “messy in the best way” that’ll take viewers behind-the-scenes of their experience in dance bootcamp).
Girls’ Life: What’s the story behind your new song, “What U Want”?
Recker: I’d say “What U Want” is kind of about a situationship. Things are confusing, and she’s basically giving you the runaround. You’re just asking her, like, What do you want? Because sometimes I’m too much and sometimes I’m not enough.
GL: When did each of you first start performing?
Bryan: We’ve all been performing our whole lives. Recker started on drums, Toby on piano, Caden and Tyler were always dancing and I was always singing. It kind of feels like we all took different paths that led to the same place.
GL: Is it true that you all “chose” each other for the band? How did you first meet?
Caden: Yes, that’s true. Our manager Freddy Wexler auditioned over 1,300 kids. When he found me on Instagram, he asked me to help choose the next member, and that became our formula. I found Tyler. Freddy discovered Recker, Recker brought Bryan in, and Tyler brought Toby. So even though there was this huge audition process, the final group actually chose each other. A lot of us were already friends.

GL: Where does your band’s name come from?
Tyler: There are five of us, all totally different, so hopefully one of us is just your type. If not…
Toby: …if not we really have no chance.
GL: What was the best part of dance bootcamp? And what was the hardest part?
Caden: For me, the most fun part of bootcamp was getting to work with people I’ve looked up to since I was a kid and actually getting to know them on a personal level. It was really full circle.
Bryan: I’d say the most challenging part of bootcamp was learning how to use my body. Recker and I came into this project not being dancers at all, and there were definitely moments where it pushed me to my limits. Having my bandmates with me really helped me get to where I’m at now.
GL: Who’s one of your biggest musical inspirations?
Toby: Ice Spice.
Tyler: Dominic Fike—because we kind of share the same carefree energy when he’s performing.
Caden: There’s so many for me but my top three would be Chris Brown, Justin Bieber and Drake.
Recker: There’s a lot but to sum it up, I would say Justin Bieber, Benny Blanco and Bruno Mars.
Bryan: Lately, my inspo has definitely been Mk.gee and Pharrell.
