Everyone says, “Be there for your friends.” But what does that actually mean?
Sometimes you think you’re showing up, texting them nonstop, giving advice or planning a surprise, but it doesn’t always land the way you hoped. That’s because the best way to support someone isn’t about what you would want…It’s about what they need.
Enter: love languages. And yes, they totally apply to friendships, not just to your BF or GF. Here’s how to show up for your besties in ways that actually make them feel loved…
Words of Affirmation
If your friend lights up when you hype them up or send long, encouraging texts, this is their language. Send them a random “I’m so proud of you” text before their big test or musical audition. You could also leave a sweet note in their locker or backpack, compliment them on their ambition/smarts/soccer skills and remind them of their worth when they’re feeling down. Just make sure you don’t assume they “just know” you care. Say it—they need to hear it!
Quality Time
This friend doesn’t just want to hang out—they want intentional time together. Plan a coffee date, a study session or a Target run with just you two. You should put your phone down and *actually* listen, since this will make sure they feel completely seen and loved. And don’t forget to show up to their games, performances and events, too!
Acts of Service
This is the friend who remembers everything for everyone, so when they’re overwhelmed, step in. Help them study by quizzing them before a test, bring them their favorite snack when they’re stressed or offer to help with a project that’s on their plate. If they are overwhelmed with a long to-do list, do the small things they keep putting off. Don’t wait for them to ask—try to notice what they need.
Gifts
They feel seen when you give something thoughtful. And this doesn’t have to mean something expensive! Pick up their favorite candy “just because,” send them a meme that reminded you of them or make a tiny care package during finals week. Better yet, give them something that connects to an inside joke—the thought matters more than the price tag.
Physical Touch
If your friend is a hugger or always links arms with you, this is probably their love language. To show your love for them, give them a great big bear hug when they’re upset, offer a reassuring shoulder squeeze before their big audition or hold their hand during a scary movie.
