All of our most beloved main characters in books, movies and TV have something that makes them unique: A special talent, a brilliant mind, a dreamy soul or just feeling out of place. It all makes for incredible characters, bc honestly, you’re not a main character if you’re not a little “weird.”
Luna Lovegood

One of the most iconic weird girls out there, Luna Lovegood is a reminder to all of us to remain kind, curious and above all else, ourselves. From the moment we first met her on the Hogwarts Express, she has remained her complete and total unique self, never masking her true feelings or interests. Dreamy, gentle and deeply intelligent, she lets the world know who she is while still remaining kind to everyone. She is a genuine and warm presence throughout the Harry Potter series, someone who stays true to herself amidst all the chaos of witchcraft, warfare, blossoming romance and growing up. While she struggles at first to connect with others due to her uniqueness, she is a true friend and someone we could all use in our lives.
Coraline Jones

Headstrong, curious and honest, Coraline is both a style icon (the blue hair + yellow coat is a total look, and serves some serious Halloween costume energy) and an inspiration to curious girls everywhere. While sometimes her sense of adventure and her longing for excitement lead her down a bad path (maybe don’t trust strange women with buttons for eyes), she is resilient and recognizes what’s most important when the time is right. Coraline shows us the importance of being brave, chasing adventures and accepting everyone, no matter what quirks they possess.
Alice in Wonderland
Alice is a true OG, and (as is said in Dash & Lily) “the patron saint of weird girls.” Never quite grounded in reality, she let her imagination reign supreme, and that is something we could all use a little more of. She was creative, curious and ahead of her time. Like a true icon, she broke the mold without ever trying to. Alice didn’t follow trends—she made her own world and invited the rest of us to peek inside. Her spirit was equal parts whimsy and wisdom, a reminder that it’s okay—no, essential—to see the world a little differently.
Wednesday Addams

With season 2 in full swing, we couldn’t forget to include our deadpan queen. Wednesday is completely unique and comfortable in her own skin, and she owns her morbid self in such a magnetic way that we can’t help but be drawn in. While independent, she shows herself to be a brave and loyal friend when it matters most. She sets her own trends, writes her own rules, and follows her spooky delights with a reverence we can’t help but admire. Beyond the iconic outfits and iron wit, she inspires all of us to be a little more brave and a little more cooky (but we prefer spooky).
Hermione Granger

Another classic, we couldn’t leave out the witch we all wanted to be (bc seriously, how great would it be to be besties with Harry and Ron, fighting dark wizards and still acing all your exams?). Hermione is completely unafraid to speak her mind and fight against injustice (let us never forget SPEW). Having risen against oppression herself, she is a force to be reckoned with. Dangerously smart, passionate and loving, she is the perfect blend of brains, heart and spirit. She reminds us all to never back down from what we believe is right, no matter what anyone else says, and to care for others while still allowing our talents to shine.
Katniss Everdeen

Katniss isn’t your typical fun-loving protagonist—she is so much more. Brave, independent and dangerous with a bow and arrow, she isn’t here to play, and we love her for it. While initially closed off and a bit tough to crack (smart with survival, clueless with feelings), once she lets people in, she is completely tied to them and willing to risk everything to keep them safe. She reminds us of both the importance of individual worth and capabilities and the persistence of love and hope in dark times. Her strength isn’t about charm—it’s about resilience, loyalty and quiet defiance. Katniss shows us how one brave voice can spark a revolution.
