We’re calling it now: sleek, slicked-back hair is the trend for fall. From celebs on the red carpet to TikTok hair tutorials, this look is everywhere—and for good reason. It’s polished, timeless and works whether you’re in homeroom, hitting the field or heading out for a night with your besties.
We asked Stanley Nolan, Ogle School’s Veteran Cosmetologist & Beauty Education Specialist, for the best how-to on how to achieve that classic, trendy updo.
Stanley’s answer? “Start by adding a styling product to your hair like a gel or leave-in conditioner. Then, brush your hair smooth from roots to tips gather your hair into a bun or pony. Secure with pins or a pony holder, smoothing down any frizz or bumps with your hand or the back of your brush. You can also use cute clips or bobby pins for any stray hairs or bumps. Note: If your hair is extremely dense, you can section this off with a center division line. Start by brushing the hair in the back up to the desired height of the pony, then add the front to it. This gives a sleeker look as well as making it a lot easier to manage tons of hair when styling.”

The Classic Low Pony
Smooth your hair straight back and secure it low at the nape of your neck. Pair it with a middle part for instant model-off-duty energy.

The Snatched High Pony
Want major drama? Brush your hair up into a super-high ponytail and keep it sleek with gel. It gives you instant Ariana Grande vibes. (Dangerous Woman Tour vibes, anyone?)

The Glossy Bun
Perfect for dance, cheer or dressy nights—just twist your slicked-back pony into a bun and secure with pins. Add a little shine spray for a glass-hair finish.
