There’s something about fall that just feels like a reset. The air gets crispy, the leaves turn vibrant and, tbh, you can’t help but think of all the areas in your life that deserve a metaphorical makeover. Our latest Bestie Book Club read, Winging It, is basically your mini manual for embracing change this season.
When Luna learns she’ll be moving 2,000 miles away, it’s safe to say she’s anything but thrilled with the arrangement. She’s dreading leaving behind her California hometown, school and besties. And on top of it all? She’s moving in with a grandmother she barely knows.
But after sensing how excited her dad is to introduce her new hometown of Washington, D.C. (where her late mother grew up), Luna visits the National Museum of Natural History. With the help of her mom’s old notebooks as a guide to her new life, Luna tries to make the most of everything the historic city has to offer.
Whether you’re stuck in a mid-semester rut or looking to reinvent yourself like Luna, we’ve got the ultimate New You Checklist to help you make the most of your transformation era. Plus, we asked a few of our Bestie Book Club members to dish on starting fresh—and exactly what Winging It taught them about new beginnings.
Hey, Besties!
Was there a moment in Winging It that you really related to?
“I loved the snow day part. It was a new experience for Luna that brought her closer to her new life and friends. It felt like being on set for The Really Loud House, which had a similar effect on me.” — Lexi J.
“Luna’s resilience. Even after all she’s been through, she is still excited for what the future holds.” — Mia Belle P.
“When she realizes that even though people *look* like they know what they’re doing, we’re all just trying to figure things out. That hit home. It reminded me that everyone’s just winging it sometimes…and that’s OK.” — Henley M.

It’s amazing how a simple closet refresh can make you feel like a totally new person—and fall is a fab time to add some fresh pieces to your rotation. While your wardrobe overhaul doesn’t have to be as drastic as Luna’s (just imagine having to swap from sunny California fits to cold-weather Virginia knits), treating yourself to one or two new sweaters can bring major New You energy. Psst: Hit up the thrift store or a consignment site like eBay or Poshmark to snag vintage finds (think: barn jackets, cable-knit sweaters and riding boots) for way less.

Let’s face it, a room refresh never fails to boost your mood. The first step? Think about what kind of vibe you want (comfy-cozy, maximalist, cottage chic)—then head to Pinterest to curate the perfect mood board.
When you’re picking out new pieces, keep functionality (think: a spot to sit while you study) and aesthetics (that thick-knit blanket would look amazing on your bed) in mind.
The best-decorated bedrooms reflect your personality—so make sure to add a few touches that really show off your style. Whether it’s posters, color-changing LED lights or vibrant trinket trays for your ever-growing jewelry collection, those little accents will make your space shine.
Pro tip: Add an element that reflects your heritage. Just like Luna’s fascination with her namesake, the luna month, you could add old fam photos, your birth flower or wall art that nods to your zodiac sign.

And don’t underestimate the power of a new paint color. A fresh coat can make your space feel brand new, even if you’re keeping all your furniture the same. To spruce up your walls, print out some pics from your phone (you know, the shots of you and your besties at the boba shop, your dog sticking his tongue out, your dreamy summer beach vacay) and add ’em to a bulletin board. So cute!
Hey, Besties! If you were moving tomorrow, what’s the first thing you’d pack?
“My dog Rocky! Not that he really gets packed, but he’s gotta come with. And probably my filming equipment, so I can continue to audition wherever I am.” — Lexi J.
“I’d pack my favorite hoodie. It’s my cozy essential!” — Mia Belle P.
“Definitely my skincare bag and my journal. I can’t survive without my lip gloss, cleanser and a place to write down my thoughts.” — Henley M.
What better way to reinvent yourself than by trying something new? Join a book club, volunteer at the animal shelter or sign up for some voice lessons. Not only is it a great way to fill your free time, but you may even make some new friends along the way.
Just ask Luna—her trip to the history museum quickly turned into her go-to hangout spot and gave her the boost she needed to start over in a new city.

Hey, Besties! What advice would you give to a girl who’s nervous about starting over somewhere new?
“Things might feel scary at first, but try to think of all of the new and exciting opportunities that are waiting for you.” — Isabella K.
“I think you just have to put yourself out there and join a club or group or sports team. That way, you can meet people who have similar interests.” — Lexi J.
“It’s totally okay to be nervous—everyone feels that way! Just be yourself, smile and stay open to new people and experiences. The right friends will find you.” — Henley M.

We’ll be the first to admit that change is never easy. And as excited as you may be for a fresh chapter (think: quitting soccer and trying out for dance team instead), starting something new can bring a whole lot of nerves along with it.
The key to staying confident? Leaning on your friends and fam for support. Take it from Luna in Winging It: Change can actually take your friendships to the next level—as long as you keep putting in the effort.

Whether you’re keeping in touch with a long-distance bestie via snail mail, scheduling weekly hangouts with your friend from the neighborhood or starting a new group chat for your cousins, setting aside intentional time for bonding will ensure you have a built-in crew to support you—no matter what life throws your way.

Hey, Besties! How do you stay in touch with your long-distance friends?
“Definitely texting and Snapchat, but also FaceTiming and playing online video games together, too. I’ve also been able to meet up with former castmates in L.A. and New York, which is super fun.” — Lexi J.
“We love sending each other care packages. Who doesn’t love getting a surprise mail?” — Ashley & Kelly F.
“My besties and I are always busy with our activities, but that doesn’t stop us. We FaceTime and text all the time.” — Henley M.
