Picture this: You check your schedule and realize all your girls are in the same class…and ugh, you’re not with them. Worst. Feeling. Ever. You’re already imagining awkwardly having to choose new people for group projects, sitting alone and being totally out of the loop.
But don’t stress—this doesn’t mean you’re going to have the worst year ever. Here’s exactly how to handle it when you’re feeling left out and how to make the most of the situation:
1. Don’t freak out
It’s totally normal to feel a little off at first. Being in a different class doesn’t mean your friendships are over—it just means you’ll have new things to talk about when you meet up again. Think of it as your chance to branch out while still staying close with your crew.
2. Give the new class a chance
Even if you’re feeling awkward walking into a class without your BFFs, don’t count it out just yet. Try chatting with the person next to you or joining a new group for a class project. You never know, this could lead to some totally unexpected friendships that you end up loving.
3. Find time to catch up
Just because you’re not sitting next to each otherdoesn’t mean you have to drift apart. Meet up before school, walk to lunch together or text each other during the passing period to keep each other updated on what’s up. Staying close just takes a little extra effort, and for your squad? It’s so worth it.
4. Focus on you
Look at this as your chance to shine a little on your own. Raise your hand more. Join in on group convos. Use this as your moment to step outside your comfort zone and grow some confidence (because you’ve totally got this).
5. Be honest about how you feel
If you’re really bummed, it’s okay to talk to your friends about it. A quick “I miss being in class with you” is all it takes to let them know you’re feeling off. They’ll probably say they miss you too and come up with ways to still keep you included.
It’s okay to feel weird about it at first, but this is just a small part of your school year. You’ll find your flow, make new connections and still keep your besties close.
