From bouncy bobs to snippy shags, the ’90s are making a major comeback—and this time they’re tried and tested. Whether you’re growing out a pixie or going full glam, there’s a throwback cut that suits your vibe. Your next hair era starts now.
Spiky Pixie
It’s giving old-school Winona Ryder. To personalize your pixie, pay attention to your face shape. “If you’ve got an angular face, you might want to soften out the edges, while a rounder, oval shape looks gorgeous with sharper layers,” says hairstylist Monique McMahon.
Amazing For: Fine hair that’s straight or wavy
Style It: Surprisingly, there’s a ton you can do with a pixie (slicked down, retro waves, pinned, parted), but here’s our fave: Let it air-dry, then grab a styling paste and twist or tousle the bits you want to stand out, says McMahon. Easy and cute!
Cheeky Bixie

Meet the pixie’s lower-commitment cousin. Whether you’re growing out a short cut or ready to lose some length, ask your stylist for a pixie-bob hybrid, says hairstylist Rogerio Cavalcante. Ask for soft, face-framing layers and lots of movement.
Amazing For: Wavy, medium to thick hair
Style It: Mousse is your new BFF. Apply to damp hair, then blow-dry with a vented brush for volume. Finish by separating strands with a dab of texturizing paste for a piecey look. In the mood to mix it up? Play with your part (center is classic, go deep side for drama).
Supermodel Bob

Nothing says ’90s like a Posh Spice-inspired bob. Be specific about the length—ideally at the jawline or just below, says Cavalcante. Rounder faces benefit from soft layers, while oval or square shapes can rock a sharp, blunt cut.
Amazing For: Wavy or straight, medium to thick hair
Style It: Work a blow-dry cream through damp hair, then dry and brush under with a round brush to add volume. Finish with a cool shot to set the shape, suggests McMahon. For extra shine, add a touch of hair oil.
Bombshell Blowout

Kaia Gerber takes a page out of her mom’s ’90s playbook by channeling Cindy Crawford’s signature look. Make sure your cut includes layers—that’s what gives it movement, advises hairstylist Justin Toves-Vincilione.
Amazing For: Straight, wavy and curly hair
Style It: Mousse it up, then blow-dry with a round brush, working in two-inch sections. As you finish, wrap hair around with a velcro roller (away from your face), pinning near the roots, says Toves-Vincilione. Let everything cool, then shake out your volume-packed waves.
Cloud Curls

We’re turning up the volume with this one. For a super round shape, fi nd a curl specialist who can snip your ’do dry, taking into account your hair type, density and shrinkage. That way, the cut works with your natural pattern, not against it, says stylist and curl expert Deisy Alfaro.
Amazing For: Type 3 and 4 curls (but wavy girls can rock it, too)
Style It: Use a curl cream or mousse to shape before diffusing or air-drying. “And don’t be afraid to fluff for extra volume,” says Alfaro.
Casual Shag

So you want the feathery movement of a bohemian bob…without losing length? “This is a softer version of the wolf cut and mullet—longer in the back with shorter fringe,” explains McMahon. Bring in reference photos that match your hair type, so the cut turns out exactly as you envision.
Amazing For: Fine to medium wavy or curly hair
Style It: Scrunch a curl cream through damp strands and rough dry with a blow-dryer, advises McMahon. Use a small round brush to finesse your bangs.
