I’ve tried nearly every beauty tool out there—my bathroom drawers are packed with everything from gua sha stones to facial rollers to microcurrent gadgets. So when LED light therapy (promising to clear blemishes, smooth texture, reduce inflammation and more) entered the chat, well, color me intrigued: Can a device that looks straight out of a horror movie *really* be the skin solution I’ve been searching for? Let’s peer behind the mask…
The science
LED (which stands for light-emitting diode) uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin at varying depths. Each color offers unique benefits.
Red light boosts collagen and improves skin texture, while blue light reduces inflammation and targets acne by killing bacteria, explains facial surgeon Dr. Michael Bassiri-Tehrani.
Some devices also feature a purple setting, combining red and blue light to offer the benefits of both. And green light masks? Ideal for addressing uneven skin tone and irregular pigmentation.
Bright idea
There are tons of LED options on the market, but Dr. Bassiri-Tehrani recommends choosing devices with clinically tested wavelengths (630 to 700 nanometers for red light and 415 nanometers for blue light), FDA clearance and strong reviews.
When looking for the device that’s right for you, consider your specific goals. Want to target problem areas like breakouts? A wand might be better than a mask. Looking for a spa-like experience at home? Some tools offer additional features like massage or cooling alongside light therapy.
One caution: If you have persistent acne, eczema or darker skin prone to hyperpigmentation, consult your dermatologist to determine if LED therapy is suitable for your treatment plan.
Light this way
Start with a few sessions to gauge your skin’s sensitivity, then gradually work up to the recommended usage time. “Excessive exposure doesn’t enhance benefits and could irritate the skin,” warns Dr. Bassiri-Tehrani (so no, leaving it on longer isn’t better).
Before using any device, be sure your skin is clean and free of products for optimal light absorption and to avoid irritation. “Never wear makeup or sunscreen under your mask,” say Lauren Berlingeri and Katie Kaps, co-founders of the LED wellness company Higherdose.
While some devices allow for a lightweight serum to be applied beforehand, Dr. Bassiri-Tehrani says to check the instructions to confirm your device is made for that.
And definitely avoid retinol, which makes your skin super sensitive to light exposure. (Speaking of exposure, always keep your eyes shut during treatment, as looking at the light can be harmful.)
Used correctly, you should start to see results in a month or two. And of course, “LED light therapy should be viewed as an add-on,” Berlingeri and Kaps remind us. “The best thing any girl can do for her skin is a regular simple routine of cleansing, moisturizing and daily SPF.”
