You open Instagram or TikTok just to “check out one thing.” Five minutes pass…and then, in the blink of an eye, it’s suddenly been an hour. Your brain feels fried, your pile of HW is *still* staring at you and you’re left wondering how this happened again.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Doomscrolling happens to the best of us, especially when we’re dealing with stress or exhaustion. The good news? Breaking the doomscrolling habit doesn’t mean deleting TikTok and going totally offline. It’s about giving your brain better options instead.
So next time you catch yourself reaching for your phone, try one of these feel-good swaps. Trust, your mood (and your to-do list) will thank you.
Take a walk
If doomscrolling has you feeling stuck, the easiest thing to do is go outside and take a walk. Fresh air and sunlight can help reset your mood instantly, and moving your body breaks the scroll cycle. You can tune in to your fave Spotify playlist and podcast, or skip the headphones and enjoy the comforting sounds of nature.
To make your walk even more fun, try turning it into a mini journey. Take your dog on a mini scavenger hunt around the community. Invite a friend or sibling to walk around the neighborhood with you and use the time to catch up. Bonus points if you’re able to see a pretty sunset along the way!
Try a hands-on hobby

When your hands are busy, you’re way less likely to keep scrolling. If you’re the artsy type (or just feeling the artsy vibe), try sketching a simple drawing with pen and paper. Start with a few quick doodles of anything that catches your eye. Your adorable stuffed animal or the view outside your window? Perf for letting your creativity flow.
If you prefer crafty DIYs instead, try knitting or crocheting. Follow a quick tutorial on YouTube and practice simple patterns. As you get more comfortable, you can eventually work your way up to cozy scarves and small plush animals.
Start a book list

There’s just something comforting about a physical book or magazine that your phone can’t replicate. And keeping a book nearby gives you a quick swap when you feel the urge to scroll.

Declutter your space

A messy room can *totally* make a messy mind. Instead of cleaning everything, set a 10-minute timer and focus on one small area in your room, whether it’s your desk, your backpack or your bed. This way, it feels more doable—and you still get that satisfying sense of accomplishment when the timer goes off.
Practice mindful journaling

If your mind feels stressed and cluttered, take a few minutes to write your thoughts out in a journal. Start by jotting down exactly how you’re feeling (eg. “I’m feeling happy,” or “I’m feeling nervous.”) No overthinking or perfect sentences needed—just let your pen move as your thoughts come. You can end by writing one thing you’re grateful for or one small goal for the rest of the day.
