Here\u2019s a hot take from 18-year-old singer-songwriter Frances Anderson: She wouldn\u2019t mind living on a tour bus 24\/7. As in, bunking sardine-style with a lively crew of 12, surviving on gas station snacks and getting (not-so-gently) rocked to sleep every night by the motion of the wheels. \u201cYou wake up, you\u2019re still moving and you\u2019re like, hmm, what state am I in now?\u201d she laughs.<\/p>\n

Recalling her first tour last fall\u2014where she opened for alt-pop sensation Hannah Bahng, ran her own merch booth and wowed crowds chanting her name\u2014Frances admits that life on the road isn\u2019t for everyone. \u201cBut I personally love being around a lot of people appreciating music. That\u2019s why I do what I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soon, fans will have plenty more to appreciate: After countless late nights furiously tapping lyric ideas into her iPhone (\u201cIf you ever want to see what\u2019s going on with a girl, check her Notes app\u201d), Frances just dropped a deluxe version of her debut indie-folk EP Drown.<\/em><\/p>\n

Even if you haven\u2019t streamed it yet, chances are Frances and her dreamy music have already crossed your FYP\u2026once, twice or 100 times. She\u2019s racked up serious TikTok fame with videos of her lip-syncing to Rene\u00e9 Rapp and Hayley Williams, reviewing food with her mom and dancing to her own songs in her bedroom like nobody\u2019s watching (aside from her nearly 3 million followers, of course).<\/p>\n

Before rising to social media stardom, Frances played America\u2019s unofficial baby sis\u2014the precocious and universally adored Lily\u2014on the Emmy-winning sitcom Modern Family<\/em>.<\/p>\n

From ages 4 to 12, little Frances (then known by her full name, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) balanced home-schooling with an acting career, essentially growing up in front of the show\u2019s weekly viewers. \u201cI was so known for being Lily. When I\u2019d go out in public, that\u2019s what I\u2019d get recognized for,\u201d she shares. \u201cSo it\u2019s been crazy to see those same people, who knew me for that one thing, start enjoying my music.\u201d<\/p>\n

What everyone tuning into Modern Family<\/em> couldn\u2019t see at the time was Frances cultivating a behind-the-scenes passion for singing. \u201cMy first love was musicals,\u201d she recalls. \u201cIt started when I learned to sing \u2018Tomorrow.\u2019 I dreamed of being Annie on Broadway.\u201d (Present-day Frances still struggles to pick even a \u201cMount Rushmore\u201d of her four favorite shows.)<\/p>\n

During breaks from belting show tunes, Frances also picked up songwriting. She wrote her first original during a hangout with her childhood bestie, Kati. \u201cI was in seventh grade, and she helped me write a song about this guy I had a crush on,\u201d Frances says. \u201cKati literally had a section where she was rapping.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Drown<\/em> and its deluxe version don\u2019t feature any rap breaks, that same hopeless romantic streak remains. For the gals who love love, the record is packed with stories from Frances\u2019 real life, including some serious truth bombs about her high school relationship.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything on this EP is pulled from my personal experiences,\u201d she reveals. \u201cIt\u2019s always been therapeutic for me to express how I feel through writing, and I think it\u2019s easier to say harsh things with nice melodies under them.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not to say it\u2019s easy to pour \u201cthe worst breakup you\u2019ve ever had\u201d (as Frances puts it) onto the page. \u201cAt first, I had no intention of releasing anything,\u201d she confesses. \u201cIt was just me, in my room, working through complicated feelings of anxiety and frustration.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Frances, though, baring your soul is 100% worth it. Not just for her, but for anyone wanting to create something truly authentic. \u201cI had to let my vulnerability be my strength,\u201d she admits. \u201cAnd as an artist, that\u2019s the best thing you can do. I never want to shy away from that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The straight-from-the-heart sadness on the EP is complemented by plenty of genuine joy, too. Her cover of \u201cMaps\u201d\u2014originally by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and a forever fave for Frances\u2014includes an interlude where attentive listeners can hear two girls chatting, giggling and, well, just being girls together.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my gosh, you want to know what that was?\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s that same friend, Kati, who I wrote my first song with. She was with me when I was recording and we couldn\u2019t stop cracking up, so I kept it in and dedicated the song to her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

Hoping to make more musical memories this year, Frances says both an album and a bigger tour are on her 2026 bucket list\u2014which she\u2019ll start checking off now that one last (highly pressing) debate is settled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a vote, and we decided my fans are called The French Fries,\u201d she says, grinning and flashing the results of a poll on her phone.<\/p>\n

We assume it\u2019s a silly nod to her name (French Fries\u2026Frances\u2026get it?), but to her, the moniker itself isn\u2019t what matters. \u201cThis was always what I wanted: to have a strong community around my music. Anyone and everyone is welcome to be a French Fry.\u201d<\/p>\n

And yep, we\u2019re more than ready to dig in.<\/p>\n
