\"Liamani<\/p>\n

The first time I met Liamani Segura back in August, she was keeping a huge secret from me. And everyone else, for that matter.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong: In many ways, the 17-year-old actress, singer and songwriter is an open book. She was thrilled to talk about playing Princess Pink, daughter of the Queen of Hearts, in Descendants: Wicked Wonderland<\/em> (out next summer).<\/p>\n

She delved into the original music she\u2019s releasing in the coming months. She even admitted that, despite being an October baby, she\u2019s never actually tried a pumpkin spice latte.<\/p>\n

But toward the end of our conversation, after we\u2019d spent a good minute fangirling over Descendants<\/em> (\u201cWhen I was little, I wanted to dye my hair purple and blue like Mal and Evie,\u201d Liamani confessed), I asked her a question that made her instantly light up.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s take Descendants<\/em> out of the picture for a second. What\u2019s your other favorite throwback DCOM?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, I\u2019m a sucker for all of them, but I looove Camp Rock<\/em>,\u201d Liamani said before breaking into the chorus of \u201cCan\u2019t Back Down.\u201d She was joking around, but she did happen to hit that choreo perfectly…<\/p>\n

You, dear reader, probably already know what I didn\u2019t at the time: Liamani is set to star in the latest installment of Disney Channel\u2019s most iconic franchise, Camp Rock 3,<\/em> where she\u2019ll jam out alongside the legendary Jo Bros and fan favorites like Malachi Barton and Lumi Pollack.<\/p>\n

When news of her casting finally broke\u2014right before we sat down for dim sum in Vancouver\u2019s Chinatown\u2014I thought back to our first chat and couldn\u2019t help but smile. I wondered if Past Liamani had been trying to send me a secret message or if I\u2019d just been played (in the best way possible).<\/p>\n

The one thing I do know for sure? Future Liamani is about to spend the next 12 months taking over your screens, your playlists and your whole heart.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

GL: You just wrapped shooting the cover for your new single, \u201cChristmas I Won\u2019t Forget.\u201d So let\u2019s start with the most important question: Outside of yours, what\u2019s your favorite holiday song?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Liamani:<\/strong>Ha! I\u2019m into the classics, like Gene Autry\u2019s \u201cRudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.\u201d I love a good Christmas song with cozy, nostalgic vibes.<\/p>\n

Does “Christmas I Won’t Forget” bring that energy?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s what I tried to do, write about my real-life traditions. Every year my family has a huge dinner with yams, green bean casserole and\u2014my favorite\u2014fruit salad. (Me again: If you\u2019re picturing something healthy here, don\u2019t. Liamani\u2019s secret family recipe involves copious amounts of whipped cream and marshmallows.) We watch The Polar Express and make milkshakes with eggnog. Everything I mention in the song is literally something I do every holiday season. What\u2019s your favorite Christmas song?<\/p>\n

What can I say, always an \u201cAll I Want for Christmas Is You\u201d fan.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I love that one, too. I grew up on Mariah Carey. My mom would always play her and Whitney Houston\u2014you know, the singer singers\u2014and try to teach me the riffs.<\/p>\n

What other music did you listen to when you were little?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

My older sister and I were huge Disney girls. The Cheetah Girls<\/em>, Teen Beach Movie<\/em>\u2026the list goes on and on. And Descendants<\/em> and Camp Rock,<\/em> of course. I\u2019d watch those movies on repeat and idolize Demi and the Jonas Brothers.<\/p>\n

Crazy to think you\u2019re shooting with them right now for Camp Rock 3<\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s been surreal, a dream come true. When I got the call that I\u2019d booked the role, I immediately started crying.<\/p>\n

Understandable. What are the vibes like on set?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a party every day. There\u2019s never a moment where we\u2019re not laughing, smiling or making TikToks. And I\u2019m actually about to start a prank war. I\u2019m going to either draw mustaches on everyone\u2019s pictures or TP the trailers.<\/p>\n

You do love to keep things classic. Can you tell us about your character, Sage?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Sage is super bold. She\u2019s got a spunky, fun personality.<\/p>\n

Anything else you\u2019re able to tease about the film?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are so many Easter eggs. Jaws are going to hit the floor when people see what we brought from the original Camp Rock<\/em> to Camp Rock 3<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s not the only DCOM you\u2019re leading next year. You\u2019re playing Kylie Cantrall\u2019s little sister in Descendants: Wicked Wonderland<\/em>. How was that experience?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It was insanely special. I remember when I first tried on my character Pink\u2019s wig, her heels, her little skirt and all the sparkles\u2014I about died.<\/p>\n

Does Kylie give older-sis vibes IRL?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Totally. We got so close working together. It was like a sister bond. (Deep-cut trivia: Liamani is a proud middle child, so she knows a thing or two about sib dynamics.) I could go to her for basically anything. I\u2019d ask for her advice on my career, my singing, even boys.<\/p>\n

What was the best part of joining the Descendants family?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing better than having cast friends. It\u2019s a different kind of bond. Our director would host parties or dinners, and we loved meeting up, watching movies and playing cards.<\/p>\n

And was there any part of it that was tough for you?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Hmm, probably being so young and having all these eyes on me, only because I still have so much to learn. It\u2019s kind of scary when you feel like the world is watching.<\/p>\n

How old were you when you performed in front of an audience for the first time?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I was in my kindergarten talent show. There were maybe 50 people in the room, if that. I sang \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner.\u201d A video of it got posted and the reaction was crazy. I remember everyone saying, \u201cYou\u2019ve got a big voice in that tiny, tiny body!<\/p>\n

So when did you start writing your own songs?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

When I was 5 or 6, I was gifted this Minnie Mouse journal\u2014my first-ever songbook. (Apparently it was pink too…how\u2019s that for foreshadowing?)<\/em> I remember that I wrote a song about my grandma. The lyrics were so silly but sweet, like, \u201cGrandma, I love your eyes.\u201d I think I still have the pages somewhere in my special box.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s adorable. What else do you keep in there?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It fits the perfect amount of random stuff: a stuffed animal of Wilbur, the pig from Charlotte\u2019s Web<\/em>, my baby blankets, songwriting pages and a bunch of things from my childhood. (Exactly what you\u2019d expect from someone whose first EP, <\/em>Dear Little Me, was partly a love letter to her younger self\u2014who she\u2019s affectionately dubbed \u201cLili.\u201d)<\/em><\/p>\n

We love a sentimental gal.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I know, I\u2019m such an emotional person. My special box is going everywhere with me \u2019til I\u2019m like 50. No, \u2019til I\u2019m gone. I\u2019ll probably be buried with it.<\/p>\n

Does that sensitive side influence your writing today?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Definitely. My LP\u2014which I\u2019m working on now\u2014shows a whole different side of me. Sometimes when I\u2019m in the studio, I have to talk about things I\u2019ve been through, even if it\u2019s painful, so I can turn them into songs. I wrote one song recently that made me cry while writing because it held so much emotion and heartbreak.<\/p>\n

It must be hard to be that vulnerable.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For sure. But it\u2019s a beautiful thing to let listeners know they\u2019re not alone. Everybody gets their heart broken. I want the girlies to cry with me!<\/p>\n

Besides working on the album, what will you be doing over the holidays?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Hanging out with my family and going to my grandparents\u2019 house. That always makes me feel grounded. I love cooking with them and introducing my grandma to shows she\u2019s never seen before. I just got her hooked on The Summer I Turned Pretty.<\/em><\/p>\n

And when you look to next year and beyond, what do you hope the future holds?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Big picture, I cannot wait to sell out Madison Square Garden. That\u2019s been one of my biggest goals in life, along with performing at the Grammys. Hopefully someday. I\u2019m putting it out there, manifesting it.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t wait either. We\u2019ll keep our fingers crossed.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
