Dear Carol,<\/strong><\/p>\n Some kids in my school use ChatGPT to <\/span><\/strong>write papers, and some teachers in my <\/span><\/strong>school use it to grade them. My dad doesn\u2019t <\/span><\/strong>like AI. He thinks kids should think for them<\/span><\/strong>selves and that AI makes everyone lazy. <\/span><\/strong>What do you think?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n – AI Or Not?<\/strong><\/p>\n Dear AI Or Not,<\/p>\n Artificial intelligence can be an invaluable <\/span>tool in many fields, but I\u2019m siding with your <\/span>dad. As a writer, I know how important it is <\/span>to be able to think clearly and to express <\/span>myself without a machine\u2019s help. I don\u2019t <\/span>phone in this column or press a button\u2014 <\/span>I give it time and thought. I like using my <\/span>brain and heart and find it satisfying to <\/span>come up with what I want to say and how I <\/span>want to say it. Someday, if you submit a col<\/span>lege application essay, the admissions team <\/span>might be able to tell whether you sweated it <\/span>out or blithely asked a program to generate <\/span>words for you. Thing is, universities want to <\/span>know who you are, not how prompt-savvy <\/span>you are. And what if everyone handed in <\/span>schoolwork without ever learning anything? <\/span>Talk about brain rot. AI can sometimes pro<\/span>vide shortcuts and save tedious busywork. <\/span>But there are risks to letting a program do <\/span>your writing for you.
