Dear Carol,<\/strong><\/p>\n Lately, a girl on my track team has been giv<\/span><\/strong>ing me lots of corrections. Not tips, correc<\/span><\/strong>tions. I want her to stop. I know the entire <\/span><\/strong>point of getting corrections is to make you <\/span><\/strong>better, but she\u2019s correcting me on things <\/span><\/strong>she\u2019s bad at herself! It\u2019s so hypocritical. Hon<\/span><\/strong>estly, I wouldn\u2019t mind if she was one of the seniors<\/span> or coaches, but we\u2019re both freshmen <\/span><\/strong>and she only joined the team this year with <\/span><\/strong>no experience. I was on the middle school <\/span><\/strong>team\u2014and we won a state championship. <\/span><\/strong>I\u2019d like for her to stop, but how can I tell her <\/span><\/strong>without sounding rude?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n – Overcorrected<\/strong><\/p>\n Dear Overcorrected,<\/p>\n Nobody loves being told what to do. That\u2019s <\/span>one of the perks of being Dear Carol: I get <\/span>to offer advice because girls ask for it. Since <\/span>you do not want this person\u2019s opinion, tell <\/span>her that her corrections aren\u2019t helping you\u2014 <\/span>and that you do better with encouragement <\/span>instead. Me, too: When I want notes, I ask <\/span>for them. Otherwise, unless a correction is <\/span>coming from a pro, it will probably just make <\/span>me self-conscious. I admire that you don\u2019t <\/span>want to be rude, but it\u2019s OK to call her out <\/span>on this behavior.
