It’s completely okay to make mistakes—after all, you’re in a brand new place with brand new people. We recommend asking upperclassmen for advice regarding the classes you’re taking, and asking your teachers any questions you have on their material. That way, you can feel totally prepared when class starts.

Don’t bite off more than you can chew: know what your limits are (and don’t push them!)

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-305515 size-full" src="https://girlslife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/IMG_5784.jpeg" alt="A young woman with wavy brown hair sits outside on a yellow chair, smiling brightly at the camera. It might seem like you have to make varsity tennis and take all honors, but if you’re the gal who has too much on her plate, chances are, it’s going to be hard to adjust to. The coursework for middle school and high school are already so different, and piling on the extracurriculars and advanced classes might be overkill.

Our advice is to pick out a couple of things you’re really passionate about and focus on those during your freshman year. Maybe you want to have a great academic year, or really want to score a spot on the soccer team. Either way, it’s always great to challenge yourself—after all, how else are we going to learn and grow? But, this is just your reality check, just so you have no regrets mid-year.

Adapt an open mindset

Not only are grades key in high school, but so is attitude: The ability to adapt and adjust to new things can take you far in not just high school, but in life. This could be on anything, from taking notes on a textbook reading to trying out for a sports team. What is incredible and often rare to see in people is turning a tough or “bad” situation into something that can be taken as a lesson.

Have fun!

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-305514 size-large" src="https://girlslife.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/IMG_5785-1024x900.jpeg" alt="A woman with braided hair poses outdoors, making peace signs with both hands.
