You may have seen the headlines or heard the news online: The Trevor Project\u2019s LGBTQ+ support through the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is officially shutting down on July 17\u2014and it\u2019s leaving a lot of people heartbroken, confused and, honestly, scared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For so many LGBTQ+ teens, being able to call or text someone who truly understands what you\u2019re going through was life-saving. It meant not having to explain yourself, not having to hide, just getting to talk to someone who gets it, without judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That\u2019s what made this hotline so important. And that\u2019s what makes this loss feel so heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What\u2019s actually happening?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The Trevor Project, a nonprofit dedicated to suicide prevention for LGBTQ+ youth, has announced that its partnership with the national 988 Lifeline is ending. This change was ordered by the Trump administration, which directed federal health agencies to shut down the LGBTQ+ Specialized Services program within 30 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That program, known for the \u201cPress 3\u201d option, allowed LGBTQ+ youth who called 988 to immediately speak with a trained counselor who understood their identity and experiences. In 2024 alone, nearly half of the 500,000 people helped by The Trevor Project came through that hotline.<\/p>\n\n\n

Why are they ending it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
According to government officials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- The funding for LGBTQ+ services is being absorbed into the general 988 budget<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- They say they want to \u201cserve all help seekers\u201d instead of offering specialized options<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- A White House spokesperson said this was to avoid supporting \u201cradical gender ideology\u201d \u2014 a statement that\u2019s gotten major backlash<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Jaymes Black, CEO of The Trevor Project, called the decision devastating and pointed out that removing support in the middle of Pride Month\u2014and dropping the \u201cT\u201d from \u201cLGBTQ+\u201d in the announcement\u2014felt especially cruel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSuicide prevention is about people, not politics,\u201d Black said. \u201cYou are worthy. You are loved. And you belong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why it mattered so much<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
For LGBTQ+ youth, having someone to talk to can be everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many teens don\u2019t have a safe or affirming adult in their lives. Others are scared to come out, dealing with bullying, or struggling with mental health issues in silence. The Trevor Project\u2019s 988 line gave them a lifeline, a real person on the other end of the phone who wouldn\u2019t judge them, who understood what they were going through, and who knew how to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This wasn\u2019t \u201cjust a hotline.\u201d It was a source of c<\/strong>onnection, compassion, and hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Taking that away doesn\u2019t just remove a service. It sends a message to LGBTQ+ youth that their specific struggles don\u2019t matter, and that\u2019s not OK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
